Sharepoint Version 3.0 Multiple File Upload Wizard

I love Sharepoint Version 3.0.  Its really a big improvement over the previous versions in many ways.  What do they say?  V3 is where we get it right? :-)

So tonight, I’m working on slides tonight for a talk that Joe Wilson and Christian Frei are delivering at the end of July.  So that my Friday night is not a complete bust, I am working on the deck from the lobby of my hotel, enjoying a cocktail, using the free wi-fi in the lobby and doing some people watching.

The slides have a lot of graphics and a couple of embedded videos so its huge.  When I did attempt to upload the deck, my connection would time out before the upload would complete.  I really needed to get the latest updates online so to lock on the outline.  Just as I was about to go and find a wired connection, I noticed an upload multiple files option below the standard upload item.

I selected it and was taken to a page where I could easily select items from my local PC.   I selected my slides this time when went to upload the slides, SharePoint used BITS to transfer the slides (BITS stands for background intelligent transfer) which works very well at uploading and downloading files over slow connections without timing out.

This is the upload dialog.  BITS is the same mechanism Windows Update uses to send critical updates to your local machine and its available for any developer to incorporate into their application.  In fact Duncan on my team wrote a .NET wrapper for BITS quite sometime ago.

This is sweet.  SharePoint V3 I love you…   Slides uploaded, time for another cocktail. :-)
